Cell replacement therapy as a potential treatment for diabetes using differentiated stem cells
Diabetes is characterized by chronic high blood sugar due to a deficiency of insulin from the pancreatic islets. Islet transplantation reverses high blood sugar; however, its widespread use as a form of insulin replacement therapy is limited by the scarcity of cadaveric donor islets. We are exploring stem cells as an unlimited source of insulin producing cells to treat diabetes. Using a stepwise protocol, we can convert the stem cells into insulin producing pancreatic islets. We are now optimizing this cell culture protocol while also investigating procedures that will permit large scale manufacturing of stem cell-derived islet cells. Ultimately, we hope that these cells can be used to effectively treat diabetes.
Register here to attend the virtual brunch.
A donation of $25 to the Charitable Trust to attend would be greatly appreciated.
